Review Dawn of the Void Book 2
Wow, what a ride! "Dawn of the Void Book 2: A LitRPG Apocalypse Trilogy" completely blew me away. I went into it expecting a good LitRPG – I've read enough to know there's a lot of variation in quality within the genre – but this book surpassed my expectations in so many ways. Phil Tucker has crafted a truly compelling story that kept me hooked from page one to the very satisfying (though slightly cliffhanger-y!) ending at 3 AM. Yes, I admit it, I stayed up way too late finishing it!
The characters are what really shine. James, despite carrying the weight of the world (literally!), is wonderfully flawed and relatable. He's not some invincible super-soldier; he makes mistakes, struggles with doubt, and grapples with incredibly difficult choices. And his team? They feel like real people, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and complex relationships. I particularly loved the humor woven throughout – it provided much-needed levity in the face of impending apocalypse, and certain characters, cough Starboy and Jelly cough, were hilarious. Their interactions brought a lot of life and personality to the story.
The plot itself is a masterclass in suspense. The "aliens take over the world" trope is hardly new, but Tucker injects fresh originality with the twists and turns he throws at you. The constant feeling of being manipulated, the uncertainty of who to trust, the ever-present ticking clock – it all builds a tremendous amount of tension. While some reviewers mentioned the military aspects being a little heavy-handed, I found it contributed to the gritty realism of the world, adding another layer of complexity to the already challenging situation. I also appreciated that the LitRPG elements weren’t overwhelming; they were integrated seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing the action and stakes without overshadowing the story itself.
Some readers mentioned typos, and while I did notice a few, they didn’t detract significantly from my enjoyment. The pacing is fantastic – fast-paced enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but with enough detail to flesh out the world and characters without getting bogged down. The ending, oh my, the ending! It left me breathless, craving the conclusion, and immediately downloading book three. This isn't just a great LitRPG; it's a gripping, emotional, and incredibly well-written post-apocalyptic thriller. If you're looking for a book that will keep you up all night, leave you pondering the implications of the story long after you finish, and leave you desperate for more, then look no further. Phil Tucker has created a real winner here, and I can’t wait to see what he does next. Five stars, easily!
